The first step to getting started in the world of mopeds is to become certified as a fully fledged rider. Whether you are at the minimum age to pick up a motorcycle or want a more powerful vehicle option, this publication will interest you. We will explain how to get a motorcycle license by answering the most frequently asked questions. Keep in mind that getting your license will be directly related to the driving schools in Spain, each one with its differences and strengths.
In addition to reading our notes, we recommend that you review in detail the driving schools in your city and what each one offers in order to have a good experience.
Frequently asked questions on how to obtain a motorcycle license
What are the different types of motorcycle licenses? What does each one imply? What is the minimum age to obtain the most basic license? These and other questions are answered below. It should be clarified that we will limit ourselves to explaining the steps for motorcycle licenses, leaving out those for mopeds (up to 50 cc) and tricycles.
What are the types of licenses and what can I drive with each one?
These are the three types of cards:
A1 License
You can get it from the age of 16 -with a common and specific theoretical exam, plus a test in a closed circuit and on an open road- or from the age of 18 with a car license -with which you can skip the common theoretical exam. It will allow you to drive motorcycles up to 125 cc displacement, with a maximum power of 15 hp, and with a power/weight ratio limit of 0.1 kW/kg.
A2 license
For bikers from 18 years of age without an A1 license, presenting a theoretical exam, closed circuit and open road test; or having an A1 license with two years of seniority, only presenting a test on a road open to traffic and on a closed circuit. With it you can ride motorcycles with up to 48 hp and unlimited displacement, and with a power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg.
Carnet A
We will discuss this type of card in the next section.
What do I need to drive any motorcycle?
To do so, you will have to obtain the A license, with which it does not matter the displacement, power or weight of the motorcycle. To have it, you will have to be at least 20 years old, have two years of A2 license and pass a 9-hour training course of theory, plus practice in a closed circuit and on a road open to traffic.
What do driving schools ask for?
With the expected minimal differences from one driving school to another, most do not charge tuition and you will need five practices for the A1/A2 track test and three practices for the road test. According to information compiled by some publications in the sector, the total price to pay for the first two licenses reaches 430 euros and for the A license almost 300 euros.
Choose a driving school with Upbikers!
Like any training institution, driving schools must comply with a minimum of conditions that protect them from any incident within their facilities. The main one is the compulsory accident insurance, however, there have been cases in which legal battles have taken place between driving school and student (you can review one of the cases here
here
).
If you want to feel more confident when applying to a driving school to obtain any of the licenses we have already mentioned, purchase Upbikers or ask the institution that has them. It is the perfect accessory for beginner bikers who are not very tall and find it difficult to perform the brake-start maneuver because they do not have enough height to place both feet firmly on the ground.
Upbikers is an attachment that is placed underneath your shoes, exactly in the main support area, adding 4 centimeters of extension to your feet. With them you will drive more safely!
